Competitor Radio, Bob Babbitt and Paul Huddle

In podcast on June 29, 2011 at 6:00 am

I love a good techie podcast, but sometimes I get overloaded listening to conversation about yet another language, methodology, project, gadget, etc. and the Competitor Radio podcast is a great diversion!

The focus of the show is on endurance athletes and events (with a bit of Ironman/Triathlon emphasis) – I rarely know the person they are interviewing, but the interviews tend to be short and energetic, with interesting details and inspirational stories.

Dance, Dance, Dance, Haruki Murakami

Dance, Dance, Dance – sequel to A Wild Sheep Chase – is another wonderful/strange Murakami novel. I do not think that Dance, Dance, Dance is among the Murakami‘s best works – such as Wind Up Bird Chronicles or Kafka on the Shore – but there was something interesting about the sense of time and journey that I enjoyed quite a bit.

Vast, Linda Nagata

In books on June 25, 2011 at 9:50 pm

In a recent blog post Alastair Reynolds, one of my favorite science fiction authors, mentioned a book and author that I had never heard of – Vast by Linda Nagata (I was obviously not the only one to take notice of this blog post – Linda Nagata mentions an increase in sales after it went up in a post on her blog).

Interstellar space travel, interesting ancient aliens, nano-tech, interesting future vision and good story. I lost interest just a bit in the last quarter of the book – but certainly not enough to be disappointing – this was a great read! This reminded me of Alastair Reynold’s Revelation Space Universe – this book is a good bet if you enjoyed those books…

Infinite Jest, David Foster Wallace

In books on June 25, 2011 at 11:20 am

I read this book for the first time in 1997 (after seeing David Foster Wallace on Charlie Rose) – it was a true revelation to read something in such a unique style that used language, settings, themes and characters that were familiar to my life/generation and that – to some small extent anyway – I immediately connected to and understood. This book was a gateway to quite a few other authors and books and each time I read it again it still feels important and relevant. This is certainly among the my top few favorite books (maybe #1?), but I often hesitate to recommend it – the length and complexity are wonderful but can also be a bit daunting…

Another blog – Readernaut, goodreads… preserving and sharing…

In about on June 24, 2011 at 12:35 am

I love to read and discovering Readernaut courtesy of several friends was a joy – the process of adding books to my account reminded me of books that I had not thought about in years – and keeping ratings and comments (and seeing that information from friends) has been quite beautiful. But this weekend Readernaut starting showing me errors when I tried to add a book – fearing the worst (since Readernaut updates have seemed sparse/slow to me) I started looking at alternate services such as goodreads. But playing with these services, pondering my experiences with Readernaut and thinking about how much fun the data about my reading has been – and how much fun it is to share – I started to have the feeling that these sites/services were not the right solution for me. I don’t really care about most of the features they offer – I care about having my data in an easy to access, easy to share form for the next ?? years… And while I appreciate the focus on books that these services offer I think it might be interesting to track my consumption of a broader set of media – podcasts and music for example – in one place! Who knows if this idea will stay interesting for the next ?? years – but I am hoping/guessing that this blog will have a much better chance than anything I have previously tried…

My older blog will remain active (not too much activity lately but…) with posts about commuting, adventures, coding, life, etc… with posts about books, movies and any other media on this blog.

Enjoy!
